…… sunshine daydreams

Trying out the google glass

Warren trying out the Google glass at the Geo Summit at the International School of Prague

Yes the summer is around the corner even though with all the rain and flooding  in Central Europe it seems so far still. There is no doubt all of us will take some time to disconnect, and break away from the demands of our respective roles in our schools, to recharge and relax. A school year in an international school is always busy, dynamic, full of twists and turns, aha moments, trouble shooting, finding solutions, providing support and a sense that time just vanishes 🙂

This academic year in the ECIS ICT community has been rich with workshops, conferences, and sharing through out iSkoodle, and regional events like the Google Apps Summits and of course our IT Conference hosted by ACS.  Again a special thank you to Steven Cliff and his team ACS Cobham International School

This last weekend we hosted the Prague Google Geo Summit at the International School of Prague, a time of digging deep into Google Maps and Earth  with the Google Geo Team from the United States. During the lunch sessions participants got to try out the Google Glass as seen in the picture where Warren A. ECIS ICT Committee member is interacting with the Glass. This technology and many that are starting to come into play in our day to day life I think again highlight how rapid the changes are in new technologies being integrated and adopted into our daily life. The world of robotics is a great example, how now many of these tools are part of a different conversation, to site a few examples: German railways to test anti-graffiti drones,  or the more bizarre event where a Tupac Hologram  participated in the tour with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre  performing at Coachella Live 2012. These technology changes and adoptions now engaging us in a different conversation as this example of UN human rights expert urges global pause in creation of robots with ‘power to kill’ . The questions we are starting to face could revolve around if robot kills another human who is to blame or take responsibility.  The ethics of drones, robots and other technologies that are given greater autonomous powers  is an important conversation. This pace of change, its impact on our lives, and often taking place in the background of our collective understanding will create a shift in many of the digital ecosystems we interact with as schools and learning communities. Ensuring we are mindful of what our role is in these conversations as educators and learning communities is key, especially to ensure our students are given a broad and balanced perceptive in understanding this every changing world of technology and the rich benefits but also the pitfalls to us all.
